This is going to be my last post in this series (at least for 2013). I wanted to find a video that would put the celebration to a close. Naturally, this meant I tried to find the most heroic, most inspirational person I could. However, one problem with that is that there have been so many inspirational people in the world from so many countries doing so many things that it is hard to pick a single one. I could have picked the 2013 CNN Hero of the Year (Chad Pregracke), but that would have just been cheating.
So then I tried to find someone who was under the radar and was doing great things for their community. The two problems with that, though, was that I would either need to find someone on the internet or track someone down in my own community. If I used someone from the internet, they would have already had a certain amount of fame and probably wouldn’t be under the radar. If I tried to use someone from my community, they might be too modest to accept, and then I would have to secretly tape a video of them, which would be both creepy and possibly illegal.
This is my compromise: I would like to nominate the volunteers at my work. Of course I could have chosen my co-workers as well, as they have the skills, patience, and dedication to work with people of all temperaments, but they also have the added incentive of getting paid. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they do this just for the money, but there is something extra impressive about someone who is willing to work for nothing at all. The volunteers are just as professional as the regular staff. While they don’t work with the public as much, they come in enthusiastically and leave the same way. They get right to their duties and, while they don’t mess around, are also kind and willing to have a conversation.
Now I hand it to you, the reader. If you are willing, take five minutes and think about the people in your life who help you through. What do they do? How do they make your life better? If you can, reach out to them and let them know.
This will be my last blog post for 2013. In January, I will start a new series that I hope you like. If you are a writer or want to be a writer, this series may be useful to you.
Have a great New Year.
